Amazingly, photographer Riaan Nysschens managed to capture the moment the deadly venom travels through the air on camera – despite the fact it could have easily killed him.

Terrifyingly, the photographic guide spotted the serpent at the lodge which he runs tours from two weeks ago – and grabbed his camera after realising that his new boarding guest was one of South Africa’s most dangerous animals, the Mozambique Spitting Cobra.

The snake was caught hiding in the Mafigeni Safari Lodge – but Riaan managed to move it to safety before capturing these amazing shots.

He said: “Our lodge is completely open with no doors and small snakes will often come through the lodge.

“When I spotted him, I safely captured the snake and moved it to a spot in the bush, safe and away from people.

“When handling a snake like this they will become aggressive and the spitting cobra gets its name from the spitting action it does in self-defence. A cobra would much rather spit than bite – knowing this I found the opportunity to try and capture the spray of the spitting cobra.

“As soon as I released it, he went into defence mode and spat at every moving thing. I took advantage of this moment and slowed my shutter speed down somewhat and got the perfect shot.

“I was very lucky to capture the moment on camera, but I was very nervous. I was less than two metres away from a snake that could have easily killed me.”
