Shocking moment Land Rover is inches away from being smashed by train
This is the heart-stopping moment a Land Rover came within inches of being smashed by a train after driving across a railway line.
Cameras captured the vehicle going over the level crossing near Llandeilo, in west Wales, only moments before the train passed.
British Transport Police (BTP) revealed the train, travelling from Swansea to Shrewsbury, made contact with the Land Rover but there were no reported injuries.
The driver was ordered to pay £500 in compensation an £85 in costs as a result of the shocking incident.
Inspector Becky Warren of BTP said: “All too often people get into the habit of taking risks at crossings and our message is simple – use crossings safely.
“It may be tempting to jump a light to shave a minute or two off your journey, but every time you do, you endanger your life and the lives of other road and rail users.
“If you fail to obey the signals then you may end up with a driving ban or a criminal record.
“Is it really worth the risk?”
BTP made the video of the incident, which happened in August last year, public as part of a week-long campaign that highlights the behaviour of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians on the country’s level crossings.
Officers revealed that 400 drivers were charged or summonsed for crossing misuse between April 1, 2014 and January 1, 2015.
A further 357 received fixed penalty notices, 568 were sent on driver awareness courses and 16 were given cautions.
Network Rail, the AA and the RAC have all joined forces with BTP as part of the Operation Look awareness campaign.
