Paw thing: dramatic footage shows man smashing through ice to rescue drowning dog
This dramatic footage shows a man smashing his way through solid ice in an attempt to save a drowning dog.
Captured on camera, the hero is seen pounding at the surface of the ice with his bare arms whilst wading through the freezing cold water.
The incredible rescue attempt was filmed by passer-by, Ilya Dvorenkov, who spotted the man taking off his shirt and diving into the Severka River near a small town outside Moscow, Russia.
At first, Ilya thought that the figure in the water was a drowning person but soon noticed it was a dog struggling to stay afloat.
Thankfully, the exhausted pooch was rescued just moments before it slipped beneath the ice and was hoisted back to the safety of the shore.
After realising the poor creature was a stray, the lucky canine was then taken in by its rescuer and even given the name, Rex.
Ilya said: “I heard a splash and turned around to see a man wading through the ice.
“I wasn’t even sure what was happening but the man was already in the water making his way towards the dog.
“He was shirtless and began smashing away the ice to the get to the dog.
“I don’t think the dog had much fight left in him, he looked exhausted.
“People driving by stopped to try and help, some were inviting them into their cars to warm up again.
“The man even said he would take the dog home and look after it, he even named the dog Rex.
“This man is a real hero, it was an extremely cold day and the water must have been freezing.”
