WKD blue addict ditches alcopop after 10 years and drops seven dress sizes
By Mollie Mansfield
Kate Best, was guzzling up to 25 bottles of bubblegum-flavoured alcopop WKD – at 228 calories per bottle – per week.
And not only that, Kate, then 21, was living off takeaways, sausage rolls and pizza – causing her to balloon to 17 stone and dress size 24.
She was working as a barmaid and found it impossible to resist WKD after a long shift.
But now 10 years on, Kate has finally ditched her addiction and is now a slinky size 10 thanks to calorie counting and exercise.
Kate, from Bracknell, Berkshire, said: “My diet was appalling, I would eat nothing but takeaways and would always have a WKDalongside every meal.
“It was nothing about the alcohol content, it was the taste that I loved.
“They were thirst quenching and delicious, I had no idea how much sugar or calories I was drinking.
“I had eight or ten every Friday night and around two per night as well.
“When I reached 17 stone I decided that my relationship was going to be under strain because I had no confidence.
“My husband, Paul, was always telling me I was fine as I was but it was just me who didn’t love myself.
“So that’s when I decided to ditch the takeaways and start cooking more, but I didn’t ditch the WKD‘s until a few years ago.
“I’d lost five stone before I fell pregnant but it wasn’t until 30 that I finally got down to 12 stone,”
Kate has always struggled with weight due to having polycystic ovaries, which causes her weight to fluctuate regularly.
But after she lost five stone she realised that her calorie counting had worked miracles.
Kate added: “I was told that I wouldn’t have kids because of my ovaries, and that’s when the weight gain truly started.
“When I was 25, I had slimmed down to about 12 stone and I became so much more confident in myself.
“We were so happy, we’d moved out of the pub and had settled into a new home, and I’d lost five stone so I was super happy.
“And then we found out that I was pregnant and we were over the moon – considering we’d always been told that we weren’t going to have a child.
“Losing weight was a blessing in disguise, I genuinely believe that it helped me to get pregnant.
“Obviously when I was pregnant I’d stopped drinking WKD‘s, but my diet wasn’t amazing.
“Even though I put on another three stone when I was pregnant I didn’t care, I was just so happy to finally be pregnant.”
But after hating what she saw on the scales nine years ago, Kate decided to start calorie counting again and once she dropped to 13 stone, she joined the gym.
Kate, who is now a personal trainer, said: “I’ve only really taken the gym seriously for the last year and a half because I was training to be a personal trainer.
“I exercise five times a week for at least 45 minutes and try and cook meals for myself as much as possible.
“I still like the ease of a takeaway, because I despise cooking, but I only order one occasionally with the kids now and I don’t beat myself up about it.
“But I have successfully stopped drinking WKD daily.
“I only stopped three years ago, when I really decided it was time to focus on my weight.
“In the last eight months, I’ve only had four, and they’ve just been on nights out.
“And if I’m being strict on myself I won’t have one, but I’ll have a little sniff of someone elses.”
WKD have been contacted for a right of reply but have declined to comment.
