Devoted couple exchange same christmas card every year for a whopping 47 years
A devoted couple have shown they know how to do Christmas in style – exchanging the same Christmas card for a whopping 47 years.
Joe Rinkus, 75, has given his wife Betty, 78, the same card every Christmas since buying a reindeer card way back in December 1968.
He bought the card from a Menzies Distribution shop in Blackburn, West Lothian, vowing that the festive gesture would last the duration of their marriage.
Betty said: “After all these years it feels like a really romantic gesture.
“We’ve lived a normal married life but the card’s been there with us every step of the way and every year we can add a little something to our story.
“When he walked out of the shop, the first thing he said was ‘that’s the only one you’ll ever get’ and he’s stuck to his word.
“But it’s a really lovely gesture, every time we get the card out it brings back all the memories of when we were newly-weds.”
The couple had been married for under six months when Joe originally bought the card for his soul-mate – with Harold Wilson as Prime Minister and Hugo Montenegro at number one in the charts.
Betty said: “It was a long time ago but the card’s still in good condition.
“It’s part of the furniture nowadays – Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it to be honest.
“It’s the moment we really appreciate that Christmas is around the corner – when Joe brings out the card again.
“This time is the 47th time of asking but we’re both hoping for many more!”
