Daredevil grandpa: 100-year-old man jumps from plane for birthday skydive
A daring grandpa celebrated his 100th birthday by jumping out of a plane at 13000ft.
Glenn Quillin decided to mark the special occasion with a skydive and asked grandson, Michael Welch, to set up the tandem jump for January 17.
The stunt was kept secret from the rest of the family until the day before, when they were handed an invitation to join Glenn at Skydive San Diego in California, USA.
Michael and his sister Lisa Rhee also braved the jump, which included a minute free-fall, while the rest of Glenn’s proud family watched from the landing field.
The jump went ahead even after another skydiver was injured upon landing and airlifted to hospital – right before Glenn’s jump.
When Glenn was asked if he still wanted to skydive, he replied: “yes of course, let’s get the show on the road.”
Glenn said: “It was awesome – a total thrill. I wasn’t scared and had been looking forward to it for quite some time.
“I was anxious getting in the air and to get going, but I wish I had another five minutes to free fall.”
Grandson Michael admitted he wasn’t really surprised when Glenn told him what he had planned.
He said: “When we had our big family party the day before the dive, he handed everyone an invitation to come watch him jump.
“Everyone was somewhat surprised, but knew that it would be something he’d like to do.
“My grandpa has the kind of personality that he would try just about anything.
“The day of the jump was great. My sister and I joined him on the dive and everything went well.
“I was and am very proud of him. He has always lived his life and this is something that he really wanted to do, and he did it.
“I’m glad the day ended well and he was able to accomplish this amazing feat.”
Glenn is so keen to skydive again he is considering making it an annual event.
