Why don’t you come on over Valerie? – Students move into Amy Winehouse’s former party pad
These three students have managed to bag themselves a celebrity pad for their third year.
UCL students Jamie and Katie claim they have moved into Amy Winehouse’s former flat in Camden.
Jamie and Katie, both natural science students, say they pounced on the property after spotting it on website Right Move.
Jamie said: “It’s like living in dream land. It’s pretty out there.
“We had already organised to get another house, but through one reason or another that fell through.
“We were all working and on holiday when we found out and didn’t have much time to look for a new place.
“Katie found this flat online. I came to have a look round on my lunch break with her and obviously we were really impressed.”
The flatmates say at first they had no idea that they were looking around Amy Winehouse’s former flat. It was only confirmed to them when they met the landlord.
Jamie said: “We were looking at the virtual tour of the flat online and one of the photos was labelled ‘Amy’s fridge’.
“We just thought ‘who is that’?
“Even when the landlord told us the history and that Amy Winehouse had lived here, we were still sceptical. We thought it might be part of the marketing pitch.
“It was only when we looked online at some of her photos and selfies that we recognised parts of the flat in the background.”
They have had to furnish it themselves, but it easily beats most other student digs.
It has space for three bedrooms, an open and beautifully lit living area, and two bathrooms – one of which as two sinks.
Right next to the bath is a phone for the entry system to let guests in – so you can stay submerged in the bubbles when you’re friends come calling.
Jamie said: “The said thing is it’s probably one of the nicest houses I’ll ever live in.
“It’s outrageous that we have it as students. We should really be living somewhere dingy.
“The kitchen is great, and I love having a magnetic strip for knives.
“But my favourite room is probably the bathroom, because it has a bath, underfloor heating, and two sinks for absolutely no reason.”
There is a small private garden and a smoking balcony upstairs.
With these features and its size, it’s a perfect party pad for the third years.
Jamie said: “It’s not a bad place for throwing a party or two. The house does have a lot of potential.
“But obviously we don’t want to ruin the place – especially the cream carpets – so we’ll probably have to limit it to one or two, and put lots of tarp down to protect the floors.”
Amy Winehouse lived in the flat during her heyday, before moving to a property in Camden Square until her death on 2011.
Camden was close to the ‘Back to Black’ singer’s heart, as she played many of her first gigs at The Dublin Castle on Parkway, and often frequented nearby nightclub Koko.
