Forget Despicable Me…this is DECIDUOUS Me! This minion-themed topiary train is causing a lo-comotion.

The off-the-rails hedge design is the one time leaves on the track isn’t a problem – and the train-shaped shrubbery has some unusual conductors.

Jack Fisher, from Retford, Notts, first started trimming his overgrown bush nearly eight years ago – and since then his tired old hedge has transformed into a blossoming evergreen engine run by a team of MINIONS.

The fun-loving 78-year-old cartoon enthusiast came up with the idea of creating the unique hedge after he became hooked on kid’s favourite Despicable Me.

Retired hotel maintenance manager Jack, who has two children and seven grandchildren, said: “In the past I’ve worked as a cinema projectionist, so I’ve got an interest in cartoon right through from Bambi to Wallace and Gromit, as well as the more modern ones.

“I’m always interested in seeing the skills of cartoonists, and the expressions they can create – so when Despicable Me came out I had to watch it.

“I was very taken with the minions, I think they’re great fun.”

Jack’s unique hedge has become something of a talking point for local residents – and after chatting to some local children as they walked home from school with their parents, who all told him how much they loved the film too, he decided to get cracking with his wacky idea.

It took a few months to complete, and Jack is thrilled with the outcome.

He said: “The hedge was a bit of a mess when I first moved in, but it’s shaped up over the years.

“I just thought, everyone has a square or rectangular hedge and it’s a bit boring – I wanted to jazz mine up, and I thought this would be fun and a bit different.

“When I put the finishing touches to the hedge and put all the minions up, all the children were delighted.

“They all knew what I was planning and they were all excited to see it – I had queues of them lining up to have a look.

“Everyone wants to take a minion home with them! Everyone who walks past loves it, it’s unbelievable.

“I made the minions out of old beer barrels – one of the local pubs was getting rid, and as soon as I saw them I knew they’d be the perfect shape for the minions so I nabbed a few.

“They didn’t take too long to put together – the arms are made from pipe lagging, and the eyes are made from the cardboard ring from a roll of carpet. The flat minions on the bush are made from plywood.

“It was the painting that took a bit of time – I wanted them to look just right.

“But now I’m retired I’ve got nothing else to do – this helps keep my mind occupied, and I enjoy doing it.

“I’m just glad other people seem to really enjoy it too.”
