Not really child’s play – but a bar has created ten cocktails based on famous children’s books.

Mixing up strange alcohols and ingredients, such as toast essence and artichoke vermouth, the drinks are designed to take you back to your childhood.

The inspiration for the ten drinks at The Blind Pig in London come from the children’s classics Winne-the-Pooh, The BFG, and Harry Potter.

They were designed by The Social Company’s group bar executive Jamie Jones, which runs the The Blind Pig.

Jamie, 33, said: “It was great fun creating all of these drinks. I definitely don’t have a bad job.

“The bar is known for its theatrics and we were trying to be very playful. We thought the best way to do that was to go back to childhood.

“Everyone at the bar actually went back and read some of the old classics to try and come up with ideas.

“Some of them jump out at you instantly, like honey for Winnie-the-Pooh or gin as a base for George’s marvellous medicine.

“Others you have to think about a little bit more, but it was incredible to do and they turned out great.

“My favourite is the Paddington Bear cocktail. He is from Peru, so I really wanted to use Pisco as a base.

“But then he really likes marmalade sandwiches, so I wanted to get that flavour in there too. We used toast essence. It’s a crisp drink but with a hint of marmalade. It’s unusual.

“The most popular cocktail is the Butterbeer. I didn’t think it would take off like it did, but Harry Potter has such worldwide appeal.”

It took Jamie and his team a full year to come up with the concept and introduce the drinks to the menu, titled ‘Long and Short of Great British Tales’.

As well as designing the drinks, Masha Karpushina was asked to illustrate the menu like a children’s tale.

Jamie said: “It’s pretty incredible what we have done. We’re really proud, and we’ve had amazing feedback.

“Everyone has a favourite story from their childhood, and we hope we’ve been able to bring a couple to life with an adult twist.”
