Oscar Pistorius jailed for five years for manslaughter

South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The high profile ruling was delivered in the High Court in Pretoria by judge Thokozile Masipa, who also gave the star athlete a three year suspended sentence for a fire arms offence.

Pistorius, 27, an amputee sprinter, was acquitted of murder, but convicted of culpable homicide.

Judge Masipa said: “I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send a wrong message to the community.

“On the other hand, a long sentence would not be appropriate either, as it would lack the element of mercy.”
