Hilarious video shows not-so plucky penguin fearfully fleeing from water after realising the sea is too flipper-ing cold.

The baby Gentoo was filmed at Cape Dolphin, Falkland Islands, frantically flapping around hysterically on the cold sea-swept sand and kelp after taking its first dip in the ocean.

The amusing video caught the hydrophobic penguin dashing around the beach desperately trying to warm up, before joining others and shaking its head in disbelief by the chilly temperatures, much to the amusement of videographer Stephen Hope.

The footage was caught by Falkland Islands Television (FITV), who claim they’ve ‘never seen anything like it’.

There are believed to be up to 120,000 breading pairs of Gentoo penguins on the archipelago, according to a 2010 survey by the Falklands Conservation.

Paula Fowmes, Station Manager of FITV, said: “I’m no penguinologist, but it looks like that penguin hasn’t stepped foot in the sea before. It looks like it came as a bit of a shock.

“It’s certainly something I’ve not seen before.

“Once you are in a penguin group quietly filming on your own, they tend to ignore you after a while.

“Stephen Hope, the videographer, filmed this at Cape Dolphin after sitting for a while taking shots for a larger project on the area.

“Stephen had been filming a larger project on Elephant Beach Farm and Cape Dolphin.

“It’s a privilege to be able to be so close to the wildlife here in the Falkland Islands. You never know what you might capture.”
