That’s what you call a hippobus – giant hippo ambushed by dozens of turtles after going for a quick dip

A giant hippo was ambushed by dozens of turtles after going for a quick dip.

Karen van der Kolk, 45, captured the unique moment while visiting Kruger National Park, South Africa on July 17.

The funny sequence of photos shows the hippobeing climbed on by the terrapin until he walks out of the water and starts to shake them off.

Karen, a photographer, said: “It was such a funny scene. We stayed the whole morning.

“A hippowas relaxing in the water. When we arrived one terrapin was sunbathing on the back of the hippobut it quickly led to dozens.

“They climbed up, sometimes falling back into the water.

“More and more little heads swum towards the hippo. At one moment the whole hippowas covered with terrapins, it must have been over 50.

“He had enough when he got out of the water and tried to shake them off, and took a dive.

“It made me smile as it was funny to watch.”
