Shut your beak – dramatic images show fight between two hawks
By Mike Jones
Shocking images show the moment a sparrowhawk attacked a jackdaw whilst holding its beak closed.
The images captured by wildlife photographer, Nigel Atkins, 72 of Leicestershire recalls the moment he came across the fighting birds in his back garden.
“I’m a wildlife photographer, so my garden is set up for wildlife – everything enables me to get the best shots.
“At first, I head the noise, I have a lot of things in my garden so after running back into the house to find a camera, I walked around looking for the birds who were hidden behind a log.
“I stood there with the camera and they even came within two yards of me, but they just weren’t interested. They were just fighting.
The photographer claims he was enticed by the fight for forty minutes but unfortunately none of the pictures could be used for competition purposes due to litter in the background.
“I was involved in a road accident almost twenty years ago which prevented me from working – so I got into photography and competition photography.
“I had to find something I could do at home and I found photography was the best thing for me.”
