Say cheese! Great white shark, jaws open, appears just feet away from photographer’s arm
A photographer captured the startling moment a great white shark burst out of the water opening its jaws just feet away from a cameraman.
Australian filmmaker Dave Riggs snapped the dramatic image off the coast of Port Lincoln, Australia, while he was filming for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.
The shark, almost 15ft in length, appeared for the once-in-a-lifetime shot after Dave had dipped his other camera into the water.
Although the image appears aggressive – the shark, jaws wide open, has scratches and blood across its face – Dave said she was simply checking out the surroundings.
Dave revealed sharks get unnecessary bad reputations from humans, and that he was not scared but happy to get up close to such an incredible creature.
He said: “She was around four-and-a-half meters in length and extremely inquisitive of what we were and what we were doing.
“Great whites don’t have hands, so she was researching the area the only way she knows how, and that was with her mouth.
“The photo is quite dramatic, but really it highlights how awesome these apex predators are.”
