Almost completely white, Snowball is one of only 11 leucistic alligators in the world and is the first one to be discovered since the 1980s.

Blizzard is a piebald alligator with alternating patches of normal colouration and solid white and is believed to be the first of its kind to ever be seen or documented.

Co-founder of Animal Crossings of Florida (ACF) in Bushnell, Florida, Nathan Sweeting, said he was lucky to spot Snowball and Blizzard making their first steps in the world after hatching in their incubator.

Nathan, 39, said: “These are 100% the result of Mother Nature’s handiwork alone and I just consider myself lucky enough to see her in action when she decided to paint outside the lines.”

Nathan, who has worked with alligators and crocodiles for more than 20 years, said that nothing like Blizzard has been seen or documented before.

The only other piebald he came across was three years ago but the white markings were limited to the head and hind legs.

He said: “They were an incredibly remarkable find not only because the odds are so outrageously against it, but also because if either Snowball or Blizzard had been born in the wild they would’ve likely been eaten by predators fairly quickly.

“Instead they have nothing more than a nice, long, full and pampered life to look forward to in the dedicated and capable hands of a beautiful zoological facility.”

Nathan explained that the pair have already been moved to their new home and are settling in well, but the zoo’s location will be kept a secret until the official announcement this summer.
