Mer-mazing! Split second optical illusion photo captures diver and whale looking fishy

A diver who had a magical encounter with a whale was caught looking like a real-life merman in this mer-mazing split-second photo.

Cheung Lai Yee Twiggy, an aerial videographer and watersport photographer, captured the image whilst swimming with whales on the island of Tonga, part of the South Pacific Islands.

Cheung visited the whales with her friend Matt, who owns the Happai Beach Resort, famous for some of the best scuba diving locations in the country.

And she was amazed the perfectly-timed optical illusion snap made Matt appear to have a huge tail.

She said: “All the photos were taken in Tonga while swimming with humpback whales.

“Some were taken when I was on boat, others were taken underwater and in very close distant to a mother and calf.

“It was an amazing and wonderful experience.

“With my photography sensitivity, I could press the shutter to capture the rare moment that a humpback tail was just behind Matt in the sea.

“It looked risky from the photo, but indeed both mammals were safe.”
