Majestic octopus intimidates diver by changing colour and angrily flaring up in act of aggression, showing who’s boss
In a rare act of behaviour, this octopus tried its best to intimidate a surprised diver, changing colour and flaring its mantel in a majestic act – and aggressive – show of defense.
Eric Demet, 54, captured the moment the octopus showcased its dominance whilst out for a relaxing dive, on July 5,
The veteran diver, swimming off the French Riviera, came face-to-tentacle with the creature when the octopus appeared to square up to him, expanding to three times its original size.
Eric, who has been on thousands of underwater trips, has never before seen such a display of aggression from a marine creature, and was left somewhat speechless and impressed.
Eric, from Dunkirk, France, said: “This was amazing, I have free dived thousands of time in my lifetime and never once been witness to such a display.”
“I had been swimming for a while when I spotted this octopus on the ocean bed.
“I free-dove around eight meters deep to get closer to him, and as soon he saw me close, he stopped swimming and grew as big as he possibly could in a show to both intimidate but also impress me – which he accomplished.
“I wasn’t scared as they can’t cause any real harm.
“I was incredibly impressed, though.
