Looking sheepish – Super cute ‘sea sheep’ slug

This cute little sea creature looks more than a little sheepish.

The bobbly surface of the tiny fluorescent sea slug resembles the white woolly farmyard animal.

But its close set eyes, pink dots as ‘nostrils’ and two minuscule tentacles almost resemble the features of a cow.

The sea slug, known as costasiella kuroshimae, or leaf sheep, shares another trait with the popular animals, as it too feeds on plants.

With its diet consisting entirely of algae, the leaf sheep has a further trick up its sleeve.

It is one of the only animals able to photosynthesis, as it can suck out the chloroplasts from its food and incorporate them into its own body in a process known as kleptoplasty.

This helps turn the leaf sheep into solar-powered little creatures.

They were pictured at the Melasti dive site off the coast Bali in Indonesia by diver and photographer Ajiex Dharma.

Ajiex, 31, said: “I am a professional guide in this area and have been diving since 2009.

“You see all sorts of creatures when you are diving, but these are by far and away the cutest and most adorable marine life I have seen.

“They look so different to anything else.

“In fact when I look at the pictures what always comes to mind is the cartoon character Shaun the Sheep.

“The face is almost exactly the same.”
