Hoppy meal! Bemused bird watches on as agile amphibian appears to perform toad-ally ridiculous dance routine
This is the moment a bemused bird was left wondering WART on earth was going on – when an agile amphibian appeared to perform a TOAD-ALLY ridiculous dance routine.
The Olive toad put on a slick performance as it executed some impressive break dancing moves around the feet of a rather baffled looking bird.
But despite the apparent energetic display all wasn’t as it seemed – as rather than strutting its stuff, the tiny toad was actually trying to escape the clutches of the hungry Hammerkop bird.
After a few tense minutes the toad managed to hop away into the water leaving the bird with a battered ego and an empty stomach.
The extraordinary scene was caught on camera by professional safari guide, Garth Thompson.
The 57-year-old was in a hide at a waterhole in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe when he saw the action just five metres away.
Garth said: “We were at the waterhole on safari, I was sitting in a hide waiting for an elephant to come down and drink.
“The first rain of the season had occurred two nights previously and the frogs had come out of estivation – the opposite of hibernation where animals sleep in the dry summer months.
“It almost looked as though this Olive toad was dancing for joy in celebration but in truth the Hammerkop was trying to soften him up before swallowing such a large meal.
“Fortunately the toad escaped back into the murky water to hopefully survive another season.”
