Now that was embarrassing! This is the hilarious moment a hippo ended up on its back when it appeared to take a tumble during a fight with another hippo.

The funny sequence of images show the hippo getting more of a fright than a fight when it lost its balance and came crashing down with an almighty splash.

The poor animal was left wriggling on back with its pink tummy and legs flailing in the air.

The humorous photos were captures by Australian tourist Kellie Netherwood.

Kellie, 41, originally from Australia but now lives in the UK, took the images while on a guided photography tour of the Masai Mara.

She said: “This took me completely by surprise.  We’d spent the morning at some great big cat sightings and had stopped by the river for breakfast.

“I had just put my camera down to turn my focus to the yummy breakfast boxes provided by our camp when I heard a large splash.

“Fortunately the camera was still around my neck and I was able to fire off a burst to capture this sequence.

“After floating peacefully with the other hippos, this one suddenly raised itself out of the water and flipped onto its back.

“This was one of those ‘wow moments’ you can sometimes experience on safari, when an animal treats you to rare behaviour that is over in a matter of seconds.

“I felt very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

“I’ve photographed many hippos, often searching for those large eyes sitting above the water or the iconic hippo yawn.

“But I’ve never seen one flip itself out of the water like this and I’m not sure I ever will again. It was a rare treat.”
