This is the moment a hungry eagle swooped in to nab an unsuspecting fish for a tasty takeaway.

As the mighty bird flew over the harbour in Rausu in Hokkaido, northern Japan, it spotted the juicy fish and dove for his dinner.

The incredible scene was caught on camera by photographer Linda Oliver, from Queensland, Australia, during a boat trip around the harbour.

Linda, a 54-year-old environmental scientist, said: “There were multiple boats out in the harbour, and everyone was keen to see and photograph the birds.

“The crew threw fish out to attract them, and there was a lot of activity going on around us – all the eagles were competing for the food.

“It was a privilege to see such a magnificent bird flying so close.

“This was the first time I’d been somewhere with so many eagles, and in such close proximity to them.

“This was also the first time I’d been able to capture such a good sequence of a bird coming into grab a catch, and then flying away with it.

“I love taking photographs that capture a moment I wouldn’t have been able to see myself – I knew this eagle had caught something, but it wasn’t until I looked at my photos that I realised it had reached down to grab the fish in its beak.

“Likewise, seeing how the feathers and wings change shape as the eagle timed catching this fishis something that you can’t see, as it all happens too fast – this sequence of photos was taken in less than two seconds.”
