Dancing on ice! Incredible footage of a polar bear slipping on thin ice before taking the plunge and going for a swim

This is the incredible footage of a polar bear slipping on thin ice and then pushing down, plunging into the icy water and going for a swim.

Heinrich Eggenfellner, the 49-year-old videographer from Norway, said: “I have encountered polar bears many times every year since I live up here and am used to them. This episode, however, was extraordinary.”

Heinrich’s colleague, Svein Wik, said: “I captured these images during the time when Heinrich was filming and Svalbard is the best place in the world to experience situations like this.

“We spotted the Polar bear sleeping and stopped maybe 200 metres away.

“It didn’t even look up when we approached it and we had to wait for several hours for it to wake up.

“Maybe we waited 3-4 hours before the bear woke up and came out onto thinner and thinner ice.

“At one point, it spread out on all four legs to prevent falling thorough the ice until finally the bear gave up, pushed through the ice and started to swim.

“He dived for a few seconds and showed up again, looking up and then started to shake of the water.

“It is difficult to explain my feelings in situations like this. I think the Polar bear is one of the most charismatic animals in the world.

“It was a rare and very interesting situation to watch everything and this was, without doubt, the ultimate wilderness experience for me.”
