Cheeky monkey! Moment hungry primate makes off with family’s breakfast
What a cheeky monkey! This hungry primate was caught on camera nabbing a family’s breakfast – from straight off the table.
Photographer Leigh Lofgren, 61, was eating breakfast with her husband Bob while on safari in South Africa.
But she noticed a group of monkeys getting closer and closer to where they were eating – and as soon as a family dining at the next table stood up to leave, the mischief-makers took their chance.
Leigh said: “We had returned from the morning safari and had gone for breakfast. There was a table of six French people at a larger table at the end of the deck and the camp staff had been using slingshots to keep the monkeys at bay.
“My husband Bob and I were just chatting, eating toast, drinking coffee and the French finally left and it was just my husband and myself.
“Our server had returned inside to help in the kitchen and we noticed the monkeys beginning to return and I always keep my camera with me – I decided to pick up the camera and wait to see what would happen, as the monkeys were getting braver and closer.
“Suddenly this one monkey flew in from the rooftop onto the table, picked up a piece of toast and then realised there was more under the napkins, so he just helped himself – he ate a piece and kept a slice in each hand for afters.
“I got some shots and suddenly our server returned, shooed the monkeys off and I put the camera down, picked up my toast and the next thing, it was gone. Another monkey had been hiding nearby and while everyone was concentrating on our server yelling to the monkeys to leave, he ran up behind me, grabbed my toast and took off – unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a shot of that, as we were laughing so hard.”
