Blue whale captured with rainbow bursting from blowhole in magical shot
A photographer captured the magical moment all the colours of the rainbow burst out of a whale’s blowhole.
Tanakit Suwanyangyaun, 36, was thrilled to be in the right place at the right time when the mystifying optical illusion splashed out of the blowhole of a blue whale swimming close to his boat.
As a stream of water shot out of the whale’s blowhole, it managed to catch the light perfectly to create a beautiful rainbow above the magnificent mammal.
Blue whales are the largest mammals ever known to have lived on earth and Tanakit was determined to make the trip to Sri Lanka from the Maldives in search of the ocean’s largest inhabitant.
Tanakit, from Bangkok, Thailand, said: “I was staying on a boat in the Maldives and thought that Sri Lanka wasn’t far away, so we decided we might go and explore.
“We wanted to explore the area to search for blue whales who are the largest living thing on our planet.
“I only ever wanted to see them underwater and did not expect to be so close to them.
“The size is beyond my wildest imagination and this shot was so lucky as it captured the breath that looked like a rainbow.”
The scuba instructor has been honing his skills as an underwater photographer for nearly a decade but admits that moments like these are incredibly hard to come by.
Tanakit said: “I think moments like these are so rare. They happen sometimes when the time is right.
“Sometimes you need to be patient and wait for nature to surprise you – and be ready to capture that moment when it does happen.
“I’m proud to be able to capture unique moments like this and share it with the world.”
