A photographer has captured these eerie scenes of an abandoned mental asylum, which has stood still for over 20 years.

The Italian hospital, which was built in the late 19th century, was used to treat mentally ill patients who were experimented on with electroshock therapy.

But it was closed towards the end of the 20th century and has remained closed ever since.

Photographer, Roman Robroe, 29, from the Netherlands, made his way into the abandoned building through dimly lit tunnels that are connected to the cellar, and was amazed by what he saw.

Roman said: “The hospital had been at the top of my ‘wish-to-see’ list for a very long time and it’s by far my favourite abandoned place that I’ve visited.

“The building had been sealed pretty well and entering was only possible via a very dark tunnel system through the cellar, it was quite creepy.

“I was taken aback by the sheer size of the building, and the decay is breath taking.

“It was interesting to see how nature has begun to take over the hospital, but it’s amazing that everything is still intact and the objects left behind are in good condition.

“When I first visited in 2014 I missed a couple of the rooms and so it was great to return in 2015 to capture the remaining rooms.”
