Daring photographer travels around snapping abandoned asylums and psychiatric hospitals
These eerie images showcase the haunting and crumbling abandoned asylums that still lie dotted across secluded parts of the USA and Canada.
Intrepid explorer Dave, of Freaktography, has spent more than six years documenting the haunting wonders, which also include the likes of psychiatric hospitals that have been left to rot.
In some images, chairs used to restrain chronically insane patients still stand, while, in others, graveyards list former inmates as nothing but a number.
Dave, who never reveals his last name, said: “When it comes to what intrigues me most, first, it is the deep and dark histories that are held within the walls and wards.
“I often do some research before I explore so I can develop an understanding of what went on inside, and it’s usually never good.
“Next, it’s the aesthetic – these places were all built a certain way and they all have similar yet unique features and with time and decay those features only get more interesting.”
Dave, who also never reveals the exact locations of the subjects he photographs, started visiting such locations in 2012 and has been travelling a photographing ever since.
Through his images, the photographer looks to show the effects of time and what happens within the walls of a building once it has been left abandoned.
He also looks to bring to life buildings that have been left empty for decades – using the likes of personal items found there to bring activity to vast decaying spaces.
Dave said: “With time and more travelling I plan to see as many of these old unused and empty asylums as I can.
“If you decide to do what I do, read up and know the safety precautions to take.
“Oh, and watch out for the ghosts!”
